Rules of the Mega Millions Lottery
Prices for MegaMillions is £3.00 per bet when you buy online.
Please Note: Mega Millions had a major rules change on October 22nd, 2013. Many of the former prizes and odds of winning have changed!
Mega Millions Rule changes, from 22/10/2013:
- You now pick 5 normal numbers from 1-75 (not 1-56) meaning your chances of winning the jackpot have decreased.
- You now pick 2 Mega Numbers from 1-15 (not 1-46) meaning you chances of winning small and mid-ranged prizes has increased.
- The 2nd tier prize has increased from $250,000 to $1,000,000.
- There is now a 5x (along with 2x,3x and 4x) Megaplier which will multiply any prize tier prize other than a jackpot.
How do you bet on Mega Millions lottery?
Mega Millions is played using 2 sets of numbers; one set contains numbers ranging from 1 to 75 and the other set has numbers ranging from 1 to 15. Your betslip will consist of 6 numbers in total; you select your 5 'normal' numbers from 1-75, and then choose your one 'special' Mega Number from 1-15 called the 'Mega Ball'.
The average Mega Millions jackpot is just under$50,000,000 but the top prize has reached hundreds of millions of dollars on many occasions. Under the new rules jackpots will grow much higher and many experts are forecasting record breaking payouts in the coming years.

How does the Mega Millions Megaplier work?
The Megaplier gives you the chance to multiply your non-jackpot prizes by 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x!. The Megaplier is weighted so that betters 60% more likely to win 4x or 5x than 2x or 3x. The Megaplier does not work on the jackpot prize. You can find a version of the Megaplier at Lottoland UK where you can multiply your bet in exactly the same manner.
Claiming Mega Millions prize money
If you are buying your ticket from an offline outlet in the United States you generally have 180 days to claim your non-jackpot winnings and up to 1 year to claim the jackpot, depending on which state you are in. You can avoid all the hassle of checking and claiming tickets by betting on Mega Millions online as all lottery winnings will be deposited directly into your account.
In the United States Mega Millions winners have the option of receiving their winnings in annual instalments. For every $1,000,000 of lottery winnings, a winner who chooses to be paid in instalments will receive approximately $40,000 each year. If they opt to receive the Jackpot as a lump sum, taxes from 30-50% will be deducted depending upon which state the ticket was purchased in.
By betting on the Mega Millions results as a resident of the UK you will pay no tax as lotteries are not subject to taxes in Great Britain. Therefore your odds of winning are the same but the amount which you can win will be up to 50% greater than it would if you played Mega Millions from within the United States.
How old do you need to be to play Mega Millions
If you play Mega Millions in the United States you must be at least 18 or 21, depending upon each state’s gambling laws. If you are betting online from the UK you must be 18 years old.

The Mega Millions Lottery is not available to play in the following states as they are not registered as state lotteries by USA law: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada & Utah.
